Stanger Than Fiction

What is better than spending the afternoon with your good old buddy, drinking,
smoking, and catching up?

Spending the afternoon with your good old buddy, drinking, smoking, and catching up while making art and listening to back-to-back Michael Jackson albums on cassette!

Oh yes we did!

Matt Stanger is one of my most-cherished  friends.  We met in 2003 when we worked at the old Grand Central Bowl on SE Morrison.  He made pizza, kept an eye on the video poker players in the back room,  & spent a lot of time drawing and listening to The Cramps.  I handed out ultra suede shoes and spent most of my shift embroidering and listening to hair bands (bowlers' request).  We were instant friends.
It's impossible to list all the stuff Matt is into. Regardless of the project, Matt's aesthetic is distinctive and everything he touches is imprinted with his style.  He is a sculptor, rocker, playwright, set designer, coloring book author, haunted house producer, painter, dj, heartbreaker, goofball, master pinstriper, button maker, t-shirt designer, salesman, ambulance driver...  and that probably doesn't cover half of it!
This is what he did to my vending machines:

Did he save Big Pink, or what?!!

Of all the art Stanger has created, his surf-rock musical Bikini Creature Beach Feature is my favorite.  Here's a clip.  Recognize anyone? anyone?

You can see (& buy!) a lot more of Matt's work on his etsy site www.etsy.com/shop/stangerthanfiction
And if you follow him on Instagram (stanger138), he'll let ya know when he's djing or playing a show.
